USS Vesuvius was built in 1888 for the US Navy as the only ship of its kind. It didn't have normal artillery, but this so called "dynamite cruiser" hat three pressure air cannons that shot projectiles that were filled with explosives. The cannons were mounted fix in the ships longitudinal axis, so that aiming had to be done with the whole ship. This fact, as well as the suboptimal stability of the ship led to a relatively short time in action.
